Please tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Kayla Drunken Chief, I’m from Treaty 7, Siksika Nation. I like playing sports and being physically involved with teamwork situations that allow me to gain knowledge along with my peers. Also, I like to learn new things and surround myself with people who are motivated.

Why did you join the mentorship program?

I was in a pre-employment program on my reserve and it allowed me to join the program when I moved to the city. From there we gathered monthly and I got to meet mentors with different backgrounds. I joined because I thought it was interesting that Canada Bridges helped different Indigenous youth in surrounding areas of Calgary. I enjoy Canada Bridges’ inspiration and engagement with one on one time to allow me to get to know my mentor who shares the same qualities and ambition in my field.

What impact has the mentorship program had on you?

It had a great impact on me by allowing me to use my knowledge of what I learned to get into post-secondary at SAIT Polytechnic. I also use my basic skills to create resumes and cover letter and am also able to build further my communication capabilities. It made me more positive and encouraged me to have a greater outlook on my future.

How would you describe your mentor, Marie-Beth? What has it been like having her as a mentor?

She is very smart and kind with a lot of business knowledge along with a heart for Indigenous people like me. She is always there for you and always around when you need to talk. She’s been helping me with a lot of things within the short time that I’ve known her; she is understanding, helpful, and considerate. It’s been a great experience so far and I look forward to meeting up with her in our next meeting.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of how I am doing with trying to find work and working on myself along with getting back into exercising, being more independent and being more proactive with keeping myself busy as well as socializing more.

What are you hoping to accomplish in the future?

I’d like to get back into post-secondary school and get a job to better my life and be more in tune with my peers. I want to not be afraid to ask for help from others and show other youth anything is possible. I hope to be a better role model.

Do you have any advice or encouragement to give to other young people like you living in the city?

There are always alternatives with help like Canada Bridges and there’s always an answer to everything. Never be shy to ask question. There is no wrong answer when asking a question. You are smart!

It’s awesome having Kayla part of our mentorship program, as she’s always eager to try new things, learn, and encourage others. We wish her great success as she continues working on her goals!
